If you visited the Japanese hot springs resort of Atami recently and spotted a disproportionate number of men gazing longingly at their smartphones, it probably wasn’t because they were playing Angry Birds. The beach town became a vacation hub for guys who like to treat their girlfriends to sun-and-fun holidays. Girlfriends, that is, who only exist on-screen. And yes, there are such men, particularly those enthralled with Konami’s Love Plus, a popular dating sim for Nintendo DS that also comes as an augmented-reality application for iPhones.  Players of the game know that to keep their virtual gals happy, they’d best spend quality time with them, throw them birthday parties, take them on dates, and yes, shell out yen for beach getaways. The object is to form and nurture a relationship with one of three high school girls with rotating outfits, distinct musical tastes, and clearly permissive parents.

When money is tight, relationships facing problems are almost overwhelmed with unfair odds.

The goal is to have a calm and relaxed discussion openly and honestly. Talking about money is not always a pleasant thing but it is necessary if two people are to share a life together.

1.  A man in a uniform knows how to look after himself. (Who wants to be some guy’s mother?)
2.  He knows how to bathe, shave, and dress himself (I’m not saying the rest of you don’t . . .of course)
3.  A dress uniform is flattering to the male figure (Ooh-YAH!).
4.  An officer is a gentleman (or at least has really good table manners).
5.  The whole demeanor of a man in dress blues, or whites, or whatever is confident and dependable. Very Sexy.
6.  Since a man in uniform knows all about responsibility and duty, he could well be counted on to take out the garbage. Theoretically, at least.
7.  Any military unit that has had to serve in a combat zone anywhere in the world comes back changed. These men (if not too deeply disturbed by their experiences) (and my heart goes out to all vets of any combat anywhere who go home broken, either physically or mentally) know the value of a sunset. Or a sunrise.

Other uniforms, not just military, work just as well, if the training behind the spit and polish is as extensive.
